The Vatican (Thursday, February 28, 2019, Gaudium Press) Pope Benedict XVI received last February 26 the visit of the Archbishop Major of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Msgr. Sviatoslav Shevchuk, in his apartment in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican. The prelate took the opportunity to update the Pontiff Emeritus on the situation of the Church in Ukraine and give him a copy of his new book entitled “Tell Me the Truth”.

According to the Archbishop Major, Benedict XVI wanted to talk right away about the conflict in Ukraine, which he described as “a great tragedy” for Europe and assured him that he daily prays for peace in the country. He also indicated the need to make all kinds of efforts to prevent a war. Bishop Shevchuk, reporting on this dialogue, said that Ukraine is “the eastern gate of Europe” and that the country must contain the aggressions so that other European countries do not become victims of the attacks.
The Pope emeritus was also interested in the growth and life of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church both in Ukraine and in the world and recalled the figure of Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, who led that Church when it was suppressed by the Soviet regime and had all its properties confiscated. Benedict XVI called the Cardinal “a man of great wisdom.”

The Archbishop gave the Pontiff Emeritus a copy of the book “Tell me the Truth” and received a medal commemorating Benedict XVI’s pontificate. During the conversation, the Pope emeritus reassured the Archbishop of his prayers for peace and reiterated that he would continue “accompanying the Ukrainian people with his prayers.”
