Rio de Janeiro (Tuesday, 10/14/2014, Gaudium Press) The Catholic Church in Brazil lived a very special moment on Sunday, October 12 celebrating on that same day three special events. Besides celebrating the feasts of Our Lady of Aparecida, Patroness of Brazil, and the “Cirio de Nazaré”, the largest Catholic procession in the world, held in Belém do Pará, the faithful were also able to celebrate another important date: the 83rd anniversary of the world famous “Christ the Redeemer” monument, on top of the Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, a land mark of Brazil.

Yet in Rome, attending the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, sent a message to highlight the importance of the famous monument of Christ the Redeemer for the country and the world.

“Today, Sunday, the day of Our Lady of Aparecida, I send my special greetings from Rome to all who at home are celebrating with joy and through Mary the day of the Lord. May Mary teach us to follow Jesus, to walk with Him and to love our Christian families, which is the focus of the Synod of Bishops gather in Rome” he wrote.

According to Cardinal Orani, “Christ the Redeemer” at the Corcovado Mountain is a “mayor work of the Church of Rio de Janeiro, with the support of the whole Church of Brazil”, considered to this day “a wonder not only for Rio de Janeiro but for the world.”

“It’s great to remember that our nation began with the celebration of a Mass and also that we have as our main symbol the “Christ the Redeemer”, which is kept with so much care by the Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro. This monument is a mayor asset which gives us the possibility to work for peace, security and brotherhood.”

At the end of his message, the Cardinal hopes that through the signs placed by God in our lives, “we may seek every day the things that come from above, the things of God.”

“May the Lord of the monument of “Christ the Redeemer”, whose arms are always open, help us to be welcoming and teach us to live our Faith. I send my greetings to all my brothers and sisters on this 83rd anniversary of “Christ the Redeemer”, he concluded. (LMI)
