According to a study by Voces!, a research and investigation center, the number of Argentines who declare themselves atheists has increased in the last decade.

Newsroom (21/06/2022 11:15 AM Gaudium Press) Founded by sociologists, Marita Carballo and Constanza Cilley, the research and statistics center Voces! has published a study showing the increase of atheism, in Argentina.

The survey shows that in the last decade the number of people declaring themselves without religion has increased considerably. One in five Argentines declares themselves to be “without religion”.

Still, 56% of people define themselves as a religious person, and 63% declare that God plays an important role in their lives.

Marita Carballo describes in an article in the Argentine newspaper Clarín that Catholics are less numerous than years ago.

In 2000, 84% of the population declared to be Catholic, against 52% in 2022. Church attendance has also suffered a decrease: only 27% of people go to church at least once a month.

The study points out that there was an increase in the number of people who seek other religions or other types of religious practices while 43% of the population declare that they perform daily prayer or meditation.

The cited article explains that for most people religion is about doing good for others and not necessarily about attending ceremonies and practicing certain rites.

The study reveals that the corruption and sexual abuse scandals have increased the discredit of the Catholic Church. In 2022, only 31% declare they trust the Church compared to 52% in 2017. (FM)
