“Marriage as established and willed by God is only between one man and one woman, a communion that gestates life and establishes the family.”
Santiago do Chile (04/06/2021, 17:06, Gaudium Press) The Chilean Episcopal Conference, through its Permanent Committee, issued a note on the 2nd of this month where it expressed its opinion about the proposal of the President of the Republic, in which he said he was in favour of “making the so-called marriage equality law urgent”.
“A challenging time that demands the best from each and every one of us”
In their note, the Chilean bishops reflect on the current situation of the country, “a challenging time that demands the best from each of us”.
For the prelates, Chile is placed in a situation in which “important decisions are being taken that will mark the future of our democracy”.
All this, the Bishops affirm, within the “profound health crisis caused by the pandemic and its economic, social and emotional consequences”, a reality that “has placed large groups of Chileans in extreme vulnerability”.
Marriage as willed by God is only between one man and one woman
Referring to the recent proposal by the President of the Republic, the Permanent Commission of the Chilean Episcopate points out, following the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ and citing the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other documents of the Magisterium, it states: “we are certain that marriage established and willed by God is only between one man and one woman, a communion that generates life and establishes the family”.
The bishops state that Chilean legislation already legally protects and recognizes those who decide to live together and they wish “that these words may help guide those who exercise the responsibility of legislating and of all people who seek the greatest good for those of us who live in Chile. ” (JSG)
