The wake will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sao Paulo. Card, Hummes will be buried in the crypt of the Cathedral.

São Paulo (04/07/2022 12:59 PM, Gaudium Press) On Monday morning, July 4, Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, Archbishop emeritus of São Paulo and Prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Clergy, passed. He was 87 years old.

A Note from Cardinal Odilo Scherer

In a note of sorrow and hope, Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, current Archbishop of Sao Paulo, invited the faithful to “raise prayers to God in gratitude for the hardworking life of the late Cardinal Hummes and of suffrage on his behalf, that God may welcome him and give him eternal life, as he believed and hoped.”

The wake will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sao Paulo. Card, Hummes will be buried in the crypt of the Cathedral. “May God welcome in his eternal dwellings our deceased brother, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, and make the eternal light shine for him,” Cardinal Odilo concluded in a statement to the entire Archdiocese.

Brief biography of Cardinal Cláudio Hummes

Born in Salvador do Sul (RS) on August 8, 1934, Auri Alfonso Hummes entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor on February 1, 1952, professing solemn vows four years later, changing his name to Claudio.

He was ordained a priest by Bishop João Resende Costa on August 3, 1958. On May 25, 1975, he was ordained bishop of the Diocese of Santo André. On May 29, 1996 he was named Archbishop of Fortaleza, being transferred to the Archdiocese of São Paulo on April 15, 1998.

During the Consistory of February 21, 2001, Pope Saint John Paul II made him a member of the College of Cardinals. From 2006 to 2011 he worked with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. Returning to Brazil, he occupied the position of President of the Episcopal Commission for Amazonia and the recently created Ecclesial Conference of Amazonia. (EPC)
