This marks a significant moment of unity with the Pope and the Church of Rome.

The Vatican’s Department of Liturgical Celebrations emphasized that when a Cardinal is appointed, they are given the title of a church in the Eternal City. This symbolizes their bond with the Pope and the Church of Rome. Cardinal Spengler received his cardinalate from Pope Francis on December 7, 2024, during the Public Ordinary Consistory at St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Church of Saint Gregory the Great: A Sacred Legacy
The Church of Saint Gregory the Great in Magliana Nuova was previously held by Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, who passed away on August 26, 2023. Since his death, the title of the church has remained vacant, awaiting Cardinal Spengler’s appointment.
