The prior of the Primatial Abbey of St Anselm will not be the 193rd successor of St Benedict. Pope Francis reportedly took the appointment decision into his own hands.

Newsroom (18/10/2022 10:40 PM Gaudium Press) —  Italian media have claimed that the Vatican has blocked the election of German monk Fr. Mauritius Wilde as abbot of Montecassino. The prior of the Primatial Abbey of Sant’Anselmo in Rome was ‘chosen’ by the monastic community of Montecassino last August when the monks met in the chapter following the appointment of Dom Donato Ogliari as abbot of the Abbey of St Paul Outside the Walls.

Despite his solid curriculum, the German monk seems not to have satisfied the Holy See, which has thus vitiated the decision of the Montecassino monks.

At this point, it is rumoured from the sacred palace that Pope Francis has decided on the appointment, which should presumably take place by December.
