At a York Catholic District School Board Meeting on May 29th, a majority vote ruled against the flying of the LGBTQ Pride Flag.

Newsroom – (May 31, 2023, Gaudium Press) A 6-4 vote against the motion to fly the pride flag culminated months of heated debate and discussion leading up to the school board’s final decision.

Initially, the Motion to Fly the Pride Flag was introduced by two student trustees representing YCDSB at the board meeting. They each presented reasons as to why they believe the pride flag should be flown during the month of June at the York Catholic District School Board. In addition to their presentations, three other trustees representing the regions of Aurora/King/Whitchurch-Stouffville, Vaughan, and Markham joined them in voicing their support.

These arguments, however, were countered by four board members who spoke out against the flag, including the Chair of the board, Frank Alexander. Their presentations highlighted that the cross is the ultimate symbol that belongs in the Catholic schools.

In a press conference, regarding the pride flag, Alexander stated that “It doesn’t align with our Catholic values, and that’s ultimately why I voted against it.”

Furthermore, when asked why the flag won’t be raised at the York Catholic District School Board, Chair Alexander replied that “What’s different about us is that we stand for our faith, we stand for Christ. And so when the question is asked, that will be the unifying figure and hopefully we might change some hearts and minds as well.”

Besides Alexander, Trustee Michaela Barbieri was among the trustees who voted against the pride flag. Her presentation outlined that the flag will not solve the problems that students are facing in the LGBTQ community, stating: ““Much more is needed to help move towards the end goal.”
