Cardinal Francisco Álvarez Martínez, Emeritus Archbishop of Toledo, died at the age of 96, after a long illness
Newsroom (January 5, 2021, 4:10 PM, Gaudium Press) The Archbishop Emeritus of Toledo, Cardinal Francisco Álvarez Martínez, died this Wednesday, January 5, at the age of 96.
The statement was transmitted by Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves, Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain, to the Spanish Archdiocese.
In his words, Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves asked the “Lord of life” to welcome the soul of the late Cardinal with the phrase addressed to the good and faithful servant: “Enter into the joy of your Lord. Cardinal Francisco Álvarez Martínez died in a Madrid hospital after a long illness.
His coffin is exposed in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. The archdiocese of Toledo informed that the funeral will take place on Friday, January 7th.
Bishop Francisco Álvarez Martínez was born on July 15, 1925, in Santa Eulalia de Ferroñes Llanera, Oviedo. He was ordained priest on June 11, 1950.
Cardinal of Santa Maria “Regina Pacis”
He was ordained bishop of Tarazona, Spain, on April 13, 1973. His episcopal coat of arms bears the phrase: “Obedentia et Pax” (Obedience and Peace). Francisco was bishop of other cities before taking over the Archdiocese of Toledo in June 1995.
In 2001 he was named Cardinal on February 21, when he received the biretta of and the title of cardinal-presbyter of Santa Maria “Regina Pacis”, and, Monte Verde. He resigned from the archdiocese when he reached the age limit on October 24, 2002. (FM)
