Cardinal Sarah will receive the Honoris Causa title from the Catholic University of Valencia

Universities give an honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to eminent persons to recognize their merits in some specific aspect.

Spain – Valencia (June 16, 2021 20:36 Gaudium Press) – Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa awarded by the Catholic University of Valencia (Spain).

Honoris Causa Title

The announcement was made public by Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, Archbishop of Valencia and chancellor of the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV); and José Manuel Pallán Agulló, rector of the UCV. The ceremony will take place next July 1, at 8 pm, at the San Vicente Ferrer School of Theology, part of the UCV.

The title Honoris Causa is a Latin term meaning “for reason or cause of honor.” Usually, an honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa is given by universities to eminent persons to recognize their merits in some specific aspect.

A Brief Biography of Cardinal Robert Sarah

Born on June 15, 1945, in Ourous, Guinea Bissau, Robert Sarah was ordained a priest on July 20, 1969. Ten years later, at 34 years of age, he was named Archbishop of Conakry by John Paul II.

On October 1, 2001, he was appointed as Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On October 7, 2010, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum.” Just one month later, Pope Benedict XVI created him Cardinal of the Diaconia of St. John Bosco in Via Tuscolana.

In March 2013, Robert Sarah participated in the conclave that elected Pope Francis. On November 23, 2014, Pope Francis appointed the African purpurate as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. In the year 2020, the purpurate turned 75, thus reaching the age limit for exercising ecclesiastical functions. (EPC)
