Earlier this week, a church in metropolitan Lyon, France, was desecrated. Sacred objects were destroyed.

Newsroom (01/12/2023 11:00 am, Gaudium Press) – Located in the French metropolis of Lyon, the church of Saint Louis the King, in Champagne-au-Mont-d’Or, was desecrated last Tuesday, January 10th.

On the afternoon of January 10th, the church was vandalized and several objects were damaged and degraded. Candles, candlesticks, books and vases were thrown to the ground. The nativity scene that was still in front of the altar was vandalized.

Objects representing the passion of Jesus Christ, such as the Stations of the Cross, two crucifixes and two paintings were particularly targeted. Some stained glass windows in the high choir also suffered damage. The altar, tabernacle and an image of Our Lady were preserved from violence. Father Martin Charcosset, in charge of the church, explained that a penitential rite will be celebrated in the church by the Archbishop of Lyon, Most Rev.  Olivier de Germay, next Friday, January 13th.

For now, the church has ceased celebrating Mass and those in charge are tidying up and restoring the sacred place. The perpetrators of the crime remain missing.
