Newsroom (August 4, 2021 16:03, Gaudium Press) On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of St. Anthony of Sant’Anna Galvão, which will be completed in 2022, the Archdioceses of Sao Paulo and Aparecida, together with the Order of Friars Minor, are promoting a special program.
The celebrations in honor of the first Brazilian saint will start on October 25th, when the bicentennial will be opened and will last until December 2022. Although it has not been released yet, the bicentennial program foresees celebrations in the emblematic places of Frei Galvão’s life, processions, cultural events, lives, podcasts, a cycle of lectures, civic tributes and other initiatives.
Opportunity to make Friar Galvão better known
Among the organizers of this initiative is historian, filmmaker and cultural producer Malcolm Forest, who produced and directed the documentary film “Friar Galvão, the Architect of Light,” released in 2013. For him, these celebrations will be an opportunity to make Friar Galvão better known by Brazilians.
In an interview to the archdiocesan newspaper “O São Paulo”, Forest highlighted that “in these difficult times we live, in so many aspects, our society needs more Faith and, therefore, valuing the testimony of Frei Galvão, a Brazilian like us, who had such an exemplary life, is very opportune”.
Saint Anthony of Sant’Ana Galvão
Saint Anthony of Sant’Ana Galvão, also known as Frei Galvão (1739-1822) was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI, during his visit to Brazil, on May 11, 2007, becoming the first Brazilian saint. One of the main devotions linked to his name are the famous “Frei Galvão pills”, which are tiny pieces of paper, on which are written verses from the Bible and are ingested by the faithful who make a request, many of which are fulfilled, some are considered true miracles obtained through the intercession of the Saint.
