The Muxima Sanctuary is considered the largest space for Marian devotion in Africa.

Angola – Luanda (24/07/2022 10:00 PM, Gaudium Press) Construction work has begun on the Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Conception of the Village of Muxima, popularly known as the Muxima Shrine or Mamã Muxima.

Considered the patron saint of Angola, this is the most popular devotion in the country and all of Africa. Every year, more than a million devotees go on pilgrimage to the shrine, located on the left bank of the largest river in Angola, the Kwanza.

The laying of the cornerstone for the renovation of the Muxima village and the construction of the shrine was attended by the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço.

According to the President, the works will benefit the Catholic Church, the city of Luanda, and the entire country, improving the quality of life of the local population and enhancing tourism activity, particularly religious tourism.

The Muxima Sanctuary is considered the largest space of Marian devotion in Africa. The requalification project of the Muxima Village will include a new Shrine, much more modern, with a new cathedral.

According to the President of CEAST, Dom José Manuel Imbamba, this work represents the recognition of the growth of the Faith in Angola. The Muxima Sanctuary originated in the year 1599, becoming an important center of Christianity. (EPC)
