The pastor of the Church of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours in Guingamp, Fr. Guy Marzin, fought the flames, alarmed by a parishioner.

Newsroom (14/09/2021 10:21 PM Gaudium Press) – The fire started on Tuesday, September 14, at around 9am (local time) on the dress of an image of the Virgin Mary located inside the Notre-Dame de Bon Secours Church in Guingamp, next to the south gate.

A parishioner noticed the flames upon entering the church and immediately started screaming for help. The parish priest was in a creperie talking with the manager when he heard the alarm. The manager grabbed a fire extinguisher and the two of them ran into the church and managed to put out the fire completely.

The police and fire department quickly arrived on the scene. No other fire outbreaks were registered at the location. The fire was set only on the dress of the image of Our Lady damaging parts of the wooden statue.

Investigators at the scene do not discard the possibility of an act of hate crime against Catholic symbols.
