The bells prevent him from sleeping late. The request surprised the mayor of Arzon, Roland Tabart, who stressed that tourists must adapt to the way of life of their vacation spot.
Redaction (04/09/2022 2:30 PM, Gaudium Press) A tourist has asked the town council of Arzon – a French village in the administrative region of Brittany, in the department of Morbihan – to “keep the bells (of the church) silent from today until 9am or until 10am to allow us to enjoy this vacation period in peace.”
This request surprised the mayor of Arzon, Roland Tabart, who stressed that tourists must adapt to the way of life of their vacation spot.
“Those who come to Arzon must accept our traditions,” he said. “About the bells, my position is clear. Every country in the world has a dominant or religious connotation. Here we have a Catholic religious entity, it is also a cultural tradition” and “I certainly will not stop the bells.”
The mayor sent a copy of the request to the superintendent of Arzon, reaffirming the religious and social role of the village bells, which ring in two ways: one linked to religious life and the other, to the municipal clock. A central element of life in Arzon, therefore, that punctuates “the social life of the villages,” and especially rural life.
And finally, he added: “Bells are part of our life. When there is a death, the bell is rung, and the village knows that it has lost one of its own. It is a sign of respect for the deceased.”
The bells will continue to ring.
