In the second chapter of her work The Abodes, St. Teresa describes her impressions upon seeing a soul in mortal sin.

Newsroom (02/10/2024 19:52, Gaudium Press: “I know of a person [St. Teresa herself] to whom Our Lord deigned to show how a soul feels when it sins mortally. She says that it seems to her, that if everyone understood it, there wouldn’t be a single man capable of sinning even if he had to subject himself to the greatest labor to escape the occasions. From then on, she had an immense desire for everyone to know. […] Just as all streams flowing from a very clear source are clear, the works of the soul in a state of grace are extremely pleasing in the eyes of God and the eyes of men, because they come from this source of life where the soul is, like a tree planted by the river, which would not have freshness and fruit if it were not for the proximity of the waters that sustain it, give it vigor, and cover it with delicious buds. On the other hand, the soul that, through its fault, departs from this source and puts down roots in another of extremely black and fetid waters, all it produces is misfortune and filth.
