Italy: ‘The Long Night of the Churches’ Event

The initiative gathers 120 Italian dioceses. Around 150 churches will be open, offering diverse programs including concerts, guided tours, and activities for children. Furthermore, many diocesan museums will also be accessible on this night.

Newsroom (June 8, 2023, 10:20, Gaudium Press) The ‘Long Night of the Churches’ is an event organized every year by the association BellunoLaNotte.com in collaboration with participating dioceses. The idea originated in 2016, inspired by the successful “Lange Nacht der Kirchen” (Long Night of the Churches) held in Austria and South Tyrol for several years, involving hundreds of churches simultaneously.

On June 9, Italy celebrated the 8th edition of this event, with free admission, under the theme “Where are you?” and approximately 120 dioceses from Italy will take part. In total, around 150 churches will be open, offering diverse programs, ranging from concerts and guided tours to activities for children. Additionally, many diocesan museums will also be open on this night.

As a result, a network of initiatives has been created, directly involving local communities,” states the director of the Long Night of the Churches. “I must also mention that the opening is unrestricted, allowing even the small churches scattered throughout Italian villages to be accessible. Throughout the year, they often remain closed due to a lack of surveillance. This night is an opportunity to visit them.”

It is also a unique opportunity to explore places of historical, religious, spiritual, and cultural value, accompanied by artistic performances.
