Who are we to judge others?
Newsroom (20/05/2023 09:00, Gaudium Press) In St. Francis de Sales illustrious work Introduction to the Devout Life, he warns Philothea, “the judgments of the sons of men are FEARFUL, because they are not judges of one another, and by judging, they usurp the office of Our Lord; they are FEARFUL, because the chief evil of sin depends on the intention and counsel of the heart, which is for us a dark secret; they are FEARFUL, because each one has enough to do in judging himself, without meddling to judge his neighbor.
It is equally necessary, in order not to be judged, not to judge others, but to judge oneself. For Our Lord forbids us the former, and the Apostle commands us the latter, saying, ‘If we judge ourselves, we shall not be judged’.
But, O God, we do exactly the opposite, because what we are forbidden we do not cease to do, judging every step of our neighbor; and what we have been commanded, which is to judge ourselves, this we never do.”
