The priests went to meet the faithful in the Kiev metro.

Newsroom (29/03/2022 9:10 PM, Gaudium PressTwo priests of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church were in one of the subway stations in downtown Kiev, which now serves as an air-raid shelter for the capital’s residents. While one celebrated Mass, the other heard confessions.

Fr. Josaphat Kovaliuk, OSBM, reported that “there are many people in this metro station who come here because they find it a safe place or even live here. Therefore, the priests responded to the request of a parishioner of St. Basil’s Church in Kiev, who works as a doctor at the station and who helped organize the Mass at this location.

“Most people welcomed this initiative and prayed with us. And although there were representatives of different denominations at the Eucharist, there was a feeling of unity in prayer,” continued Fr. Josaphat.

For him, “this is a special moment when you can be with people who need support and together pray for the end of the war, for our military, and for peace in our land.”

“We make spiritual visits almost every day, and from now on we plan to celebrate the Divine Liturgy (as the Eucharistic celebration is known in Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine Rite) once or twice a week. We want to visit other subway stations as well,” said Fr. Josaphat.
