Bishop Rolando Álvarez is detained in the Curia with eleven other people. Yesterday the police increased the number of officers holding the detainees.

Newsroom (09/08/2022 2:45 PM Gaudium Press) So far and since last Wednesday noon, twelve persons have been detained by the police at the Curia of Matagalpa – Nicaragua, including the Bishop of that jurisdiction, Bishop Rolando Álvarez, who is also Apostolic Administrator of Estelí.

Among the twelve people arrested, there is a woman.

According to an anonymous source, yesterday, the Nicaraguan police increased the number of officers guarding each of the Curia’s access: “Today there is more surveillance: more riot police wearing balaclavas. More police, both male and female,” he said. The shock troops are heavily armed. The streets around the Curia are cordoned off with yellow iron fences.

Inside the building, those detained by Daniel Ortega’s regime are fasting and praying. “They are fasting constantly, -the source revealed, -and this makes the food left over a little more, even if there are 12 people. Regarding sleeping, there are enough bunks, as the seminarians sleep there when they have activities,” it informed.

Lawyers representing the detainees suggest filing habeas corpus exemptions or writ of mandamus against illegal detention to ascertain the real reasons why they are de facto arrest. According to local laws, only a judge can impose a cautionary measure, such as house arrest.

Similar processes materialized against former presidential candidates detained for months outside their homes. Finally, the police moved on to ‘legalize’ the detention.
