Newsroom (11/03/2022 1:45 pm, Gaudium Press) The local church in Myanmar reported that religious buildings have been victims of airstrikes in recent days.
Last March 8, the church of Our Lady of Fatima, in the village of Saun Du La near the city of Demoso, was seriously damaged by a fighter plane at around two o’clock in the afternoon.
On Thursday, March 10, a convent of the congregation of the Sisters of Reparation located in Demoso was bombed at around 6 am.
The convent served as a hospital for elderly religious women. The site is next to the church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, also attacked back in June 2021.
Meanwhile, Myanmar Catholic Church leaders have denounced further attacks by military forces against churches and other religious buildings.
“There was no armed conflict in that area. It was clearly a deliberate and planned attack against the Catholic Church and innocent civilians to maximize the human death toll and annihilate religion,” a priest warned.
Since the beginning of the armed conflict between rebels and military forces, a total of eight churches in the Loikaw diocese have suffered similar attacks.
The worst bombardment took place against the Sacred Heart church in Kanyantharyear, a town near Loikaw, resulting in eight people dead and several wounded.
Priests, religious men and women from 16 parishes in the diocese had to abandon them to take shelter in safer places. (FM)
