Deacon Vega was among 222 Nicaraguan political prisoners who were deported to the US. He had been ordained a deacon by the bishop of Matagalpa.
Newsroom(05/08/2023 22:05, Gaudium Press) In a few days, Nicaraguan deacon Raúl Vega González, who received the diaconate on June 29 of last year, will be ordained to the priesthood. The reason for the joy is none other than a new minister of the Lord.
But it so happens that deacon Vega is from the diocese of Matagalpa, that of the bishop imprisoned by the Ortega regime. Moreover, this deacon was with him when Bishop Rolando Alvarez was kidnapped in the courtyard of Matagalpa and taken at dawn to Managua.
Deacon Vega was also taken to the plane that was to take the 222 political prisoners to the USA on February 9. This plane was supposed to carry Bishop Álvarez, but he refused to board in order to continue facing the martyrdom of the regime’s hatred in his country. Deacon Vega was also a political prisoner, and had already been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Now in the USA, Deacon Vega is looking forward to his priestly ordination, which will take place on May 12 at St. Thomas More Cathedral in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida.
The ceremony will be presided over by Bishop Silvio Báez, auxiliary of Managua also exiled in Florida. “His ordination is a beautiful sign of hope for the Church and the people of Nicaragua,” Bishop Baez declared.
Obviously, the memory of Bishop Rolando Álvarez will be very present in this ceremony, since he should have been the principal ordaining officer. Certainly from Modelo prison, where the bishop is being held, he will send his blessings and pray for the ministry of the new priest.
