Fr. Okechukwu’s murder underscores rising insecurity in NIgeria, with gangs and terrorists frequently kidnapping or killing clergy for ransom.

Newsroom (06/03/2025 Gaudium Press) A tragic event unfolded in Nigeria’s Kafanchan Diocese when Father Sylvester Okechukwu, the parish priest of St. Mary Tachira Church, was kidnapped and murdered. The incident occurred on the night of March 4, 2025, and has left the Catholic community grieving. This disturbing crime highlights the ever-growing insecurity in Nigeria, where kidnappings and murders are on the rise, especially among religious leaders.

Father Okechukwu’s Brutal Murder

Father Sylvester Okechukwu was abducted from his residence late at night. His body was discovered early the following day, on March 5, 2025, Ash Wednesday. The Diocese of Kafanchan released an official statement confirming the tragic event, though the motive for the priest’s murder remains unclear.

The Diocese’s Response to the Tragedy

In the wake of the priest’s death, the diocese expressed its heartache, with Father Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of Kafanchan, revealing the emotional toll on the community. “We share in the sorrow of his death with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. Father Sylvester’s loss has created an irreplaceable void within our diocesan family,” the statement reads.

The diocese has called for prayers for Father Okechukwu’s soul, inviting all priests, religious, and lay people to offer Masses, Rosaries, and prayers for his eternal rest.

Recent Kidnappings in Nigeria

Father Okechukwu’s murder is part of a broader pattern of religious violence in Nigeria. Just days before his death, two other priests were kidnapped in the Diocese of Yola. In addition, another priest and a seminarian were abducted in Edo State. This year alone, several priests and religious sisters have been targeted by criminal gangs.

The Growing Insecurity in Nigeria

Nigeria continues to face widespread insecurity, with religious leaders being frequent targets of kidnapping for ransom. Additionally, tensions between religious groups exacerbate the challenges facing Christians in the country. The kidnappings and murders of clergy members are a disturbing reflection of the broader violence affecting Nigerian society.

Call to Action for Prayer and Solidarity

The Diocese of Kafanchan is calling on Catholics worldwide to unite in prayer for Father Okechukwu and the many others affected by violence in Nigeria. This includes praying for an end to religious persecution and for the safety of those who continue to serve their communities despite the risks involved. Father Sylvester Okechukwu’s kidnapping and murder on Ash Wednesday serve as a tragic reminder of the ongoing dangers faced by religious leaders in Nigeria. The Catholic Church and the faithful are urged to continue offering prayers and support for those enduring violence and persecution in the region.
