In today’s antiphon, humanity asks the Messiah to come and open the door of captivity: O Key of David!
Newsroom(21/12/2021 08:30, Gaudium Press): An ancient tradition of the Church is the recitation of the seven ‘O’ antiphons throughout the week before Christmas. These antiphons are supplications of humanity to its Saviour:
O Key of David
the sceptre of the house of Israel
which you open and no one shuts,
You shut and no one opens:
Come and release from prison the captive
who sits in darkness and in the shadow of death.
O Clavis David
et sceptrum domus Israel
qui aperis, et nemo claudit;
claudis et nemo aperit:
Veni, et educ vinctum de domo carceris,
sedentem in tenebris et umbra mortis. (FM)
