Redaction (27/09/2022 13:00, Gaudium Press) The Ortega regime has prevented three large traditional processions in the last two months. First was the procession with the image of Our Lady of Fatima, scheduled for Saturday August 13 in the Nicaraguan capital and throughout the national territory. The procession in Managua was very symbolic because it was the farewell to that image, which was returning to its shrine in Portugal after having traveled throughout the country.
Last September 19th, the traditional procession of Saint Michael in Masaya, 30 kilometers from the capital, was forbidden. Police delegate Juan Antonio Valle dared to attend the “Misa de Bajada de San Miguel” (Mass of the Descent of Saint Michael) and was booed by the faithful. The latter in turn were chased by the police at the exit of the temple.
Yesterday was the procession of Saint Jerome, also in Masaya, when the celebrations of the patron saint began.
From the early hours of yesterday, September 20, the riot police surrounded the Church of St. Jerome, effectively preventing the procession. Not only the church was surrounded, but several access roads to Masaya were closed. Despite the blockade, the faithful celebrated the patron saint with the so-called “diana” or celebration at dawn, and the “Misa de la Bajada de San Jerónimo” (Mass of the Descent of Saint Jerome) in the afternoon.
