Newsroom (2/06/2022 15:10, Gaudium Press) The Apostolic Penitentiary published a decree this Monday, May 30, in which it grants Plenary Indulgence to the faithful on the occasion of the Second World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, instituted by Pope Francis, celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July.

How to obtain this Plenary Indulgence?

According to the document, the indulgence will be for “grandparents, the elderly and all the faithful who, motivated by the true spirit of penance and charity, will participate next July 24 in the solemn celebration that Pope Francis will preside over in St. Peter’s Basilica, and in different functions that will be celebrated throughout the world.”

Sick elderly people and all those who are unable to leave their homes for serious reasons will be able to profit from this same Plenary Indulgence by joining spiritually in the World Day sacred functions, “offering to the Merciful God their prayers, pains and sufferings of their lives, especially while the Pontiff’s words and the various celebrations will be broadcast by the media.”

Visiting the elderly

The decree further states that Plenary Indulgence will also be granted, to the faithful “who will devote adequate time to visit, in person or virtually through the media, their elderly brothers and sisters in need or in difficulty (such as the sick, the abandoned and the disabled).”

To receive the indulgence, the faithful must meet the usual conditions for obtaining this grace: to go to sacramental confession, receive Eucharistic communion and pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. The Indulgence may be applied in suffrage for the souls in Purgatory (EPC)
