Pontifical Faculty of Lima Launches online Latin Course

This Basic Latin course “introduces knowledge and handling of elementary grammatical issues of morphology and syntax of the Latin language.

Newsroom (10/07/2022 15:37, Gaudium Press) The Pontifical and Civil Theology Faculty in Lima, Peru has now opened registration for an online Latin course. Lasting twelve weeks, this course will be taught by the Latinist of the Catholic Encyclopedia, Luis Manzanares López.

The Latin language is a treasure of incomparable value

For the director of the Catholic Encyclopedia, José Gálvez Krüger, this initiative of teaching the Official Language of the Catholic Church in our days “is highly relevant for the conservation and diffusion of the Classical culture”.

Recalling that Pope John XXIII, in his apostolic constitution “Veterum Sapientia” encouraged the Latin language to be kept as a treasure of incomparable value, Gálvez pointed out that the constitution Gaudium et Spes of the Second Vatican Council encourages the promotion of classical studies.

Gálvez also pointed out that the Pontifical and Civil Theology Faculty of Lima is the oldest in America and still “enjoys immense international prestige, standing out for remaining free of ideological contaminations, being faithful in the whole Doctrine of the Chruch.

Program, Content and Registration

The website of the Pontifical Faculty of Lima explains that this Basic Latin course “introduces the knowledge and handling of elementary grammatical issues of morphology and syntax of the Latin language”.

The program content consists of the study of the Latin alphabet, the pronunciation of Latin, declinations of nouns, adjectives, personal pronouns, regular conjugations, agreement of the verb with the subject, agreement of the adjective and the noun, use of the most frequent prepositions, conjunctions, and adverbs.
