Pope Accepts Cardinal O’Malley’s Resignation

After more than twenty years, Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley is stepped down as head of the Archdiocese of Boston, the fourth largest in the United States. In his place, the Pope has appointed Bishop Richard G. Henning.

Newsroom (01/12/2024 10:00, Gaudium Press On, August 5, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Capuchin Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Boston (USA), who turned 80 in June.

O’Malley served in Florida, the US Virgin Islands and Fall River from 1992 until July 1, 2003, when John Paul II appointed him Metropolitan Archbishop of Boston. The fight against abuse was and is one of Cardinal O’Malley’s greatest concerns. In fact, Pope Francis appointed him president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in 2014 and a member of the Council of Cardinals (C9).

Bishop Richard G. Henning

In his place, the Pope appointed Bishop Richard G. Henning, 59, originally from Rockville Centre, where he was ordained a priest in 1992. The prelate has held various positions in recent years: parochial vicar of St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington (1992-1997); Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture, then Professor and Formator at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington (2002-2012); Rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary and Director of Sacred Heart Institute for Ongoing Clergy Formation (2012-2018); Episcopal Vicar for the Central Vicariate (2017); Vicar for Parish Evangelization and Pastoral Planning (2018); Vicar for Clergy (2021).

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Saint John’s University, Queens (New York), and ecclesiastical studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, Henning earned a licentiate in biblical theology from the Catholic University of America, Washington, in 2000 and a doctorate in biblical theology from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome in 2007.

Appointed the Titular Bishop of Tabla and Auxiliary Bishop of Rockville Center on June 8, 2018, he received episcopal consecration on July 24, 2018. He was appointed coadjutor bishop of Providence, Rhode Island, USA, on November 23, 2022, assuming the governance of the diocese on May 1, 2023.
