Pope Francis Appoints Extraordinary Commissioner for St. Mary Major Basilica

Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas, who will have responsibility for the economic management of the properties of the Chapter, takes on the role “until other arrangements are made.”

Newsroom (16/11/2021 09:41, Gaudium Press)  On the morning of Wednesday, December 15, Pope Francis appointed Msgr. Rolandas Makrickas as Extraordinary Commissioner for the Basilica of St. Mary Major. He has worked in the First Section of General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.

Financial management of the Chapter’ Assets

The prelate, who will be responsible for the financial management of the patrimony of the Chapter, assumes his duties “donec aliter provideatur,” that is, “until other arrangements are made.”

The Holy See Press Office explained in a statement that the decision follows the need to “respond to the particular intricacies of the economic and financial management of the Chapter of the ,” heightened by the pandemic.

The Chapter will continue to perform all liturgical functions

The Extraordinary Commissioner will be assisted in his task by a Commission composed of representatives of the APSA (Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See), the Governorate of the Vatican City State and the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy.

The statement concludes by stressing that, under the guidance of Cardinal Archpriest Stanislaw Rylko, the Chapter will continue to perform all liturgical functions and promote the pastoral activity of the Basilica of St Mary Major and the care of the faithful. (EPC)
