Pope Francis Asks Vladimir Putin to End the War

For the first time since the beginning of the war, Pope Francis publicly addressed the Russian president to ask for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.

Newsroom (3/10/2022 11:29 AM Gaudium Press) — During the Angelus on Sunday, October 2, Francis mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in a public speech.

The Pope committed the Angelus address to appeal to end the war in Ukraine. The Pontiff was concerned about the nuclear threat that filled the news, especially after Russia annexed Ukrainian territories.

“The course of the war in Ukraine has become so serious, devastating and threatening, as to cause great concern,” the Pope said, speaking to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Francis asked: “What is to happen next? How much blood must still flow for us to realize that war is never a solution, only destruction? In the name of God and in the name of the sense of humanity that dwells in every heart, I renew my call for an immediate ceasefire.”

Francis lamented the annexation of the territories and the potential risk of a nuclear war: “I deeply deplore the grave situation that has arisen in recent days, with further actions contrary to the principles of international law. It increases the risk of nuclear escalation, giving rise to fears of uncontrollable and catastrophic consequences worldwide.”

An appeal to the presidents of Ukraine and Russia

Pope Francis then publicly addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time to ask for an end to the war: “My appeal is addressed first and foremost to the President of the Russian Federation, imploring him to stop this spiral of violence and death.”

And he added a request to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky: “On the other hand, saddened by the immense suffering of the Ukrainian people as a result of the aggression they have suffered, I address an equally confident appeal to the President of Ukraine to be open to serious proposals for peace.”

Pope Francis concluded by asking for the maternal intercession of the Queen of Peace under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii. (FM)
