Pope Francis remained alert during today’s treatments, March 3rd, after two episodes caused by mucus buildup, each followed by aspiration. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed in the afternoon

Newsroom (03/03/2025 Gaudium Press) On March 3, 2025, the Vatican provided an update on Pope Francis’ health, revealing that he suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure. These incidents were caused by the accumulation of mucus in his airways, leading to bronchospasm and necessitating immediate medical intervention.

Two Episodes of Respiratory Failure

According to the Vatican’s Press Office, Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure on March 3. These episodes were triggered by significant mucus buildup in his bronchial tubes, which led to bronchospasm. Two bronchoscopy procedures were performed, during which the Pope’s medical team aspirated abundant mucus. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed in the afternoon to assist his breathing.

Positive Blood Test Results

Despite these critical episodes, the results from the Pope’s blood tests remained stable. The tests showed no signs of infection or leukocytosis, indicating that the respiratory failure was related to the accumulation of mucus due to pneumonia, rather than a new infection.

Pope Francis’ Vigilance Throughout Treatment

The Vatican emphasized that throughout the treatment, Pope Francis remained alert, oriented, and cooperative. While his health situation remains complex, with potential for further complications, the medical team remains optimistic that the Pope is responding well to the treatment.

Daily Rosary for Pope Francis

In light of these challenges, prayers for the Pope’s health continue. On the evening of March 3, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, will lead the daily rosary in St. Peter’s Square to pray for the Holy Father’s recovery.
