Pope Francis Sick, Does not Read Speech and has Difficulty Getting into Popemobile

Pope’s Health Concerns Due to Advanced Age, Special Care Required.

Vatican City (07/03/2024 16:23, Gaudium Press) Pope Francis continues to recover from a “mild cold” that led him to cancel part of his schedule at the end of February. The Pope’s health is a concern due to his advanced age. At 87 years old, the Holy Father is often seen using a cane or wheelchair for his public engagements.

After a one-week break for the Lenten spiritual retreat of the members of the Roman Curia, and having some activities canceled due to his health on Saturday and Monday, Francis participated in the General Audience last Wednesday, March 6, in the Vatican.

Papal Collaborator Reads Speech

Although present, after greeting the faithful and pilgrims, the Pontiff asked Monsignor Ciampanelli, a collaborator from the Secretariat of State, to read the text of the day’s reflection, dedicated to envy and vainglory.

“Dear brothers and sisters, I am still a bit cold. That’s why I asked Monsignor Ciampanelli to read today’s catechesis,” he explained. Then, the collaborator from the Secretariat of State delivered the speech, continuing the reflection on vices and virtues.

Concerns About Pope Francis’ Health

Furthermore, Francis also showed difficulty climbing the steps of the popemobile and opted to meet the faithful on the ground, in his wheelchair. Since taking office in 2013, the Pontiff has undergone several surgeries and has been hospitalized a few times for respiratory problems.

In 2021, after an intestinal inflammation, the Pope had part of his colon removed. The following year, due to a worsening fracture and inflammation in the ligaments of his knee that hindered his mobility, the Holy Father began using a wheelchair. In 2023, the Pontiff underwent another procedure to repair an abdominal hernia and remove intestinal scar tissue from a previous surgery. (EPC)
