Newsroom – Vatican City (May 19, 2022, 1:50 PM, Gaudium Press) The Holy See Press Office confirmed on Tuesday, May 17th that Pope Francis will preside at the Eucharistic Celebration on Pentecost Sunday. The Holy Mass is scheduled to occur at 10 a.m. (Rome time) on June 5. Afterward, the Pontiff will recite the Regina Coeli prayer.
On May 3rd, Francis underwent surgery on his right knee, which prevents him from walking normally. In his last public appearances, he had difficulty standing up and also had to use a wheelchair to get around. Because of this, his schedule has undergone several changes.
Pentecost Solemnity
During the Pentecost Solemnity, the Catholic liturgy celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Our Lady, some women, and other disciples. This solemnity marks the beginning of the birth of the Catholic Church.
This liturgical celebration occurs exactly on the eighth Sunday of Easter. The preface of the Roman Missal explains the significance of this feast: “Today the paschal mystery has been completed, and upon those whom you have made children of adoption in Christ your Son, you have infused the Holy Spirit, who in the nascent Church has revealed to all peoples the mystery hidden in the ages and has gathered all the languages of the human family into one profession of one Faith.” (EPC)
