After praying the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis made some remarks regarding the devastating situation in Haiti.

Editorial (11/03/2024 11:56, Gaudium Press) During the Sunday’s Angelus on March 10, the Pontiff reflected on the Gospel of the day, emphasizing Christ’s merciful mission, affirming that “He did not come to condemn, but to save.”

The Pope underscored Jesus’ profound understanding, stating that “nothing is hidden from Him; He discerns the heart of each individual.” This discernment, if misused, can be unsettling, as it may lead to harsh judgments that harm people. However, Jesus doesn’t exploit this insight to condemn; instead, He embraces our lives, liberating us from sin and offering salvation.

Following the Angelus, the Pope expressed his deep concern and sorrow regarding the grave crisis unfolding in Haiti and the recent violent episodes. He extended his solidarity to the Church and the resilient Haitian people, who have endured suffering for years.

“I urge you to pray, invoking the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, for an end to all forms of violence and for everyone to contribute to fostering peace and reconciliation in the country, with renewed support from the international community.”

The situation in Haiti, home to 11 million inhabitants, is dire. Armed assailants launched attacks on the presidential palace and three police stations, sparking riots in prisons that led to mass escapes and numerous casualties, alongside the displacement of approximately 15,000 individuals. The closure of the airport has hindered the delivery of humanitarian aid, heightening fears of an imminent hunger crisis.

Leaders of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) convened to address the complex situation, with the US Secretary of State slated to join discussions today. Caricom’s proposal seeks to expedite Haiti’s transition by establishing an inclusive, independent presidency and deploying a multinational mission to tackle the security crisis.

Amidst escalating turmoil, the European Union has evacuated all its personnel from Haiti.

Approximately 40% of Haiti’s population are Catholics, with 14% practicing Protestantism, while around 46% adhere to voodoo rituals.
