Newsroom (27/06/2022 8:45 PM, Gaudium Press) Next Wednesday, June 29, Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, Pope Francis will preside over a Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica during which the palliums of the metropolitan Archbishops appointed during this year will be blessed.

Origin and meaning of the Pallium

The name “Pallium” comes from the Latin word “pallium,” which means “woolen cloak.” It is a liturgical vestment used in the Catholic Church, consisting of a band of white woollen cloth placed over Archbishops’ shoulders, recalling their unity with the successor of Peter.

The Pallium represents the sheep the shepherd carries on his shoulders, just as Our Lord Jesus Christ did with the lost sheep. In other words, Palio is the symbolic representation of the pastoral mission of the Bishop, also representing one of the prerogatives of the Metropolitan Archbishops and being a symbol of the jurisdiction granted to them, being in communion with the Holy See.
