Motto for WYD Lisbon 2023
The slogan chosen for this edition of WYD is taken from the Gospel of Luke: “Mary got up and went with haste” (Lk 1:39). Pilgrims coming from more than 50 dioceses in Brazil are already preparing for the event, which was instituted by Pope John Paul II and gathers youth from all over the world.
Because of the restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic, the organizers have postponed the World Youth Day, originally planned for 2022, by one year. This edition will take place August 1-6, 2023 in the Portuguese capital.
World Youth Day
Created in 1985 by St. John Paul II, World Youth Day consists of a gathering of thousands of young Catholics from various dioceses around the world. These events take place every two to three years, and each time the Pope chooses a new country to host the event.
