Washington (October 20, 2020 5:15 pm Gaudium Press)   Abortion groups are disappointed with California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein: they believe she did not play the role they expected against the brilliant and Catholic Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who seems to have the path paved for her confirmation as one of the nine justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. These groups have asked the Senator to resign from the Senate Judiciary Committee, opening the way to a new Democratic Party leadership into this committee.

Feinstein thanked the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

After four days of hearings, in which Judge Barrett skillfully answered all kinds of questions (some of them even related to her Catholic faith), abortion groups deplored the polite tone used by Senator Feinstein in her closing remarks.

During Thursday’s hearing, Feinstein thanked Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and chairman of the Judiciary Committee, for coordinating “one of the best hearings I’ve ever been to.”

“I want to thank you for your fairness and the opportunity of going back and forth,” she said.

“It leaves one with a lot of hopes, a lot of questions, and even some ideas–perhaps some good bipartisan legislation we can put together to make this great country even better,” said Feinstein, who is pro-abortion.

Abortion groups react

Feinstein’s comments to Graham, said Ilyse Hogue, president of the pro-abortion group NARAL, gave a “semblance of credibility to the proceedings.” According to Hogue, that is “widely out of step with the American people.”

“As such, we believe the committee needs new leadership,” Hogue said, calling the Barrett confirmation process “illegitimate” and “a sham.” NARAL had always supported Feinstein in the past, such as when in 2018, she claimed to be “at the forefront of the movement to safeguard our rights.”

In the same vein as NARAL’s Hogue, the group Demand Justice has initiated a petition asking Feinstein to resign from the justice committee. The “behavior during Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings demonstrates that she is only standing in our way of fighting to protect our courts.”  Demand Justice aims to favour the election of ‘progressive’ candidates to Congress.

“Sen. Feinstein has undercut Democrats’ position at every step of this process, from undermining calls for filibuster and Court reform straight through to thanking Republicans for the most egregious partisan power grab in the modern history of the Supreme Court,” the petition remarks.

Otherwise, Senator Feinstein has asserted that she will not confirm Barret as a U.S. Supreme Court justice.
