“The knot of Eve’s disobedience was undone by Mary’s obedience; what the virgin Eve tied by disobedience, the Virgin Mary loosed by Faith.” (Saint Irenaeus of Lyon)
Newsdesk (29/06/2021 11:50, Gaudium Press) The Catholic Church celebrates today the Memorial of St Irenaeus of Lyons. Born on the island of Smyrna in the year 130, Irenaeus was a disciple of St Polycarp, who, in turn, lived directly with the Apostle St. John the Evangelist.
His writings against heretics, on Apostolic succession, and Catholic doctrine earned him the title of Father of the Church. Saint Irenaeus died a martyr’s death on 28 June, 202 during the persecution of Emperor Severus. His relics are buried in the Cathedral of Lyon.
Quotes of Saint Irenaeus of Lyon:
1 – “Just as the bread that comes from the earth, after having received the invocation of God, is no longer common bread, but Eucharist, constituted by two realities – one earthly and the other heavenly – in the same way, our bodies which participate in the Eucharist are no longer corruptible, because they have the hope of resurrection.”
2 – “Jesus Christ our Lord, because of His superabundant love, has made Himself what we are, in order to make us what He Himself is.”
3 – “Where the Church is, there is the Holy Spirit of God; there is the Church and the treasure of all graces”.
4 – “Mary, in obeying, became the cause of salvation, both for herself and for the human race. The knot of Eve’s disobedience was undone by Mary’s obedience; what the virgin Eve tied by disobedience, the Virgin Mary loosed by Faith”.
5 – “The Word of God became man, that man might receive the divine sonship… for how could we partake of eternity and immortality, if, beforehand, the Eternal and Immortal One had not been made like us, so that our corruptibility might be absorbed by His incorruptibility, and our mortality by His immortality?”
6 – “Indeed, it is to the Church itself that the Gift of God has been entrusted. It is in her that communion with Christ has been deposited; that is, the Holy Spirit, the pledge of incorruptibility, the confirmation of our faith, and the measure of our ascent to God.”
7 – “In all things and for all things there is one God, the Father, and one Word, the Son, and one Spirit, and one salvation for all who believe in Him.”
8. “It is with this Church (of Rome), by reason of its most powerful founding Authority, that the whole Church must necessarily agree; that is, the faithful coming from everywhere must agree; in it the Tradition which comes from the Apostles has always been preserved.”
9. “It is in weakness that the power of God is made manifest.”
10 – “The Virgin Mary was made the cause of salvation for all mankind”.
