The reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral officially began on Thursday 16 December with the preparation of eight oak trees destined to support the arrow of the church.

Newsroom (19/12/2021 16:00, Gaudium Press) The reconstruction of the arrow of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral began on Thursday. The owner of the Giant’s sawmill (des Géants), is proud to participate in the reconstruction of Notre Dame.

In fact, the sawmill is in charge of transforming 8 oaks of exceptional size into pieces that served as pedestals for the famous arrow of the Parisian cathedral, a work of art by the architect Viollet-le-Duc. With the preparation of the oak pieces, the restoration of the cathedral officially begins.

The trees originate from the Bercé forest and are of an exceptional size. At 22 metres long and more than a metre in diameter, the eight oaks were selected last March and will now be turned into 36 centimetre strips.

The strips of wood will then be stored until they reach the necessary humidity to be selected and used by carpenters to assemble the structure intended to support the cathedral’s arrow.

Around a thousand oak trees will be needed for the reconstruction of the arrow whose bones are all made of solid oak.

In all, 45 sawmills in France are taking part in this first stage of the cathedral’s reconstruction. General Jean-Louis Georgelin, president of the public Establishment responsible for the conservation and restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris, celebrates the fact that solidarity for the construction does not diminish.
