Newsroom – Spain – Madrid (May 19, 2022, 2:00 PM, Gaudium Press) On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the canonization of St. Isidore, the Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Carlos Osoro inaugurated last Sunday, May 15, a Holy Jubilee Year.
The celebration, organized by the Congregation of Saint Isidore, was concelebrated by the Archbishop Emeritus of Madrid, Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela; Cardinal Aquilino Bocos; the Auxiliary Bishops of Madrid, Juan Antonio Martínez Camino SJ, José Cobo and Jesús Vidal; the Papal Nuncio of His Holiness in Spain, Bernardito Auza; the Episcopal Vicars and the pastor of the Collegiate, Father Ángel Luis Miralles.
A privileged time
In his homily, Cardinal Osoro prayed that this Holy Year may be for Madrid “a privileged time to remember St. Isidore, to learn to live from God’s love. May this jubilee touch the hearts of all who live here and those who visit us.”
“May it be a year of personal and collective commitment to think about the present and the future, to think about the project that we want for the future and the foundations with which we want to build it, always aware of our history,” the purpurate said.
He also encouraged to make the Church a “family home where everyone finds a place and discovers the closeness and presence of Jesus Christ, and to live convinced that what saves the human being is the capacity to love and to feel loved unconditionally.”
Procession and plenary indulgence
After the Holy Mass, the images of the patron saint of Madrid and his wife, Santa Maria de la Cabeza, went out in procession through the main streets of the Spanish capital. The music band of the Municipal Police of Madrid accompanied the procession.
According to a decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary, during the Holy Year of Saint Isidore, the faithful will be able to profit from the plenary indulgence of those who approach the tomb of the Saint and fulfill the usual conditions: Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions.
