Newsroom (09/08/2022 9:12 PM Gaudium Press) Born in Spain in 1170, Saint Dominic was born into a noble, Catholic and wealthy family. From an early age, he dedicated himself to study, feeling called to the priesthood at 24.
Because of his intelligence and ardour for evangelization, St Dominic was sent by Pope Innocent III to fight the Albigensian heretics and spread the Gospel. In 1215, the Saint founded the Order of Friar Preachers, the Dominicans, to evangelize.
The Holy See recognized the new religious order on December 22, 1217. On that occasion, Pope Honorius III issued the final approval of this religious community, known for its members’ wisdom, poverty and austere spirit.
One day, while Saint Dominic was praying in the chapel of the first monastery of the Dominican Order, Our Lady appeared and gave him the Rosary: the weapon he used in countless preachings to convert thousands of heretics to the Catholic Faith. On August 6, 1221, at the age of 51, Saint Dominic of Guzmán gave his soul to God and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX.
