The attack took place during Communion, at a Mass dedicated exclusively to the children of the parish. The attacker, a 37-year-old Sri Lankan, was eventually disarmed by the faithful and arrested by the police, who stated that he had a criminal record for serious injuries and drug use.

The police said that they are investigating the case to find out the motive behind this infamous act and that “based on preliminary investigations, it is believed that the man acted alone, and there is no suspicion that it is an act of terrorism, at least not yet”.

Singapore cardinal says he is shocked and deeply saddened

In a message posted on social media, the Archbishop of Singapore, Cardinal William Goh, said he was “shocked and deeply saddened that violence was committed against one of our beloved priests in the house of God while he was celebrating Mass.

“I am also very concerned about the psychological impact this incident may have had on our children and all those who witnessed this attack. I ask the faithful to remain calm, not to speculate about the incident or judge without knowing all the facts. We must allow the authorities to investigate the matter,” concluded the Cardinal. (EPC)
