Seoul will have a new Archbishop. Following the Holy See’s appointment, Most Rev. Peter Chung, current Auxiliary Bishop and Discalced Carmelite, will be the new Archbishop of the Korean capital.

South Korea – Seoul (01/11/2021 14:45, Gaudium Press) The Church in South Korea has a new archbishop. Appointed by the Holy See, Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-Taik will be the new Archbishop of the Korean capital and apostolic administrator of Pyongyang (North Korea). He is the current auxiliary bishop of Seoul.

The Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea, Msgr. Alfred Xuereb, also congratulated the new Archbishop and promised prayers and support.

The official announcement was made by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, during Mass. Cardinal Yeom expressed gratitude “for the great gift that the Holy Spirit has sent to our diocese and the Church of Korea.”

“I pray that Archbishop Peter Chung will have the grace to be guided by the Holy Spirit during the synod process in the diocese,” he added.

During the celebration, all those in attendance invoked the protection of Our Lady, Queen of Peace.

The newly appointed Archbishop took the opportunity to explain that Our Lord’s plans are unimaginable and commended himself to the prayers of all to fulfill his mission.

The inauguration Mass will take place on December 8, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of Korea.

Who is Archbishop Peter Chung?

Bishop Peter Chung Soon-Taik was born on August 5, 1961, in Daegu. He first studied chemistry and then entered the seminary of Seoul Catholic University.

He joined the Discalced Carmelite order, where he took his final vows and was later ordained. In December 2013, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Seoul by Pope Francis.

Bishop Peter Chung has always been a very active representative of the church in the East. He was Provincial General of the Discalced Carmelite Order for the Far East and Oceania.

He is responsible for religion and youth in the Archdiocese of Seoul. Bishop Chung is a Director of the Foundation for research on the history of the Korean Church and presides over the Korean Commission for the Cause of Saints. (FM)
