Newsroom (06/06/2022 2:00 PM, Gaudium Press) Saint Marcellin was born in the French city of Marlhes on May 20, 1789, and his mother consecrated him to Our Lady. He entered the minor seminary even though he had not attended any school. Among his classmates was St. John Mary Vianney, also known as the Curé of Ars.

He was ordained a priest in 1816. The following year he was inspired and founded the community of Marist Brothers, through which he formed many religious teachers and catechists. The essence of his formation method, which forbade humiliating treatment and physical punishment, was love for Our Lady.

“Our community belongs entirely to Our Lady, the Mother of God. Our activities should be directed to make her loved, esteemed and glorified. Let us teach our young people devotion to her, and thus we will lead them more easily to Jesus Christ”, he advised his religious brothers.

On June 6, 1840, at the age of 51, Saint Marcellin gave his soul to God, leaving a legacy that continues to bear fruit to this day. Pope John Paul II, who canonized him in 1999, said that the founder of the Marist Brothers “was sensitive to his time’s spiritual and educational needs, especially to the religious ignorance and situations of abandonment experienced particularly by young people.
