What prayer asks, fasting obtains and mercy receives,

Newsroom (28/03/2022 12:10, Gaudium Press) According to St. Peter Chrysologus, “There are three things that maintain faith, give firmness to devotion, and perseverance to virtue. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. What prayer asks, fasting obtains and mercy receives. Prayer, fasting and mercy: three things that are one and vivify each other.

Fasting is the soul of prayer and mercy gives life to fasting. Let no one wish to separate these three things, for they are inseparable. Whoever practices only one of them, or does not practice all of them simultaneously, is as though he were doing nothing. Therefore, let him who prays also fast; and let him who fasts practice mercy. He who desires to receive answers in his prayers, let him answer the supplications of those who ask him; for he who does not close his ears to the supplications of others, opens the ears of God to his own supplications.”
