Dar es Salaam – Tanzania (09/17/2024, Gaudium Press) — From September 12 to 15, Tanzania hosted the fifth edition of the National Eucharistic Congress 2024, which gathered thousands of Catholic faithful from across the country in Dar es Salaam. A large Eucharistic procession took place from the University of Dar es Salaam’s Faculty of Education campus in Kurasini to the Msimbazi Center, marking one of the most significant Catholic events in Tanzania.

The closing event, the Uhuru Stadium Eucharistic Mass was presided over by Bishop Wolfgang Pisa, a Capuchin Franciscan and the current president of the Episcopal Conference of Tanzania (TEC). He is also the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lindi.

This is a Sacrament of Love

During his homily, Bishop Wolfgang Pisa explained that the National Eucharistic Congress 2024 was scheduled to coincide with the International Eucharistic Congress in Quito, Ecuador. Both events shared the theme: Fraternity to Heal the World.

Speaking about the Eucharist, Bishop Wolfgang Pisa stated, “This is a Sacrament of love. My brothers and sisters, let us approach this Sacrament without sin. Let us ask God to transform us through this Sacrament so that we may be whole and new.”

This Sacrament Makes Us New

The bishop emphasized that receiving the Eucharist should inspire the faithful toward a life of compassion, love, and care for others. “If you receive Jesus in the Eucharist and remain the same, then something is wrong in your life. This Sacrament makes us new,” he emphasized.

Pope Francis greetings Tanzania were conveyed by Archbishop Angelo Accattino, the Apostolic Nuncio Tanzania, to the faithful gathered at the National Eucharistic Congress 2024 in Dar es Salaam. The event underscored the strength of the Catholic faith in Tanzania, calling on participants to embody Christian witness through the Eucharist.
