War in Ukraine: 162 Religious Buildings Destroyed

The Russians continue to target and destroy Ukraine’s cultural and religious heritage.

Newsroom (17/08/22 10:56 AM, Gaudium Press) As of August 11, 2022, Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture and Information Policy had already recorded 464 episodes considered war crimes by Russia against Ukrainian cultural heritage, Oleksandr Tkachenko, spokesman for this Ministry, reported. He accused the Russians of “fighting against our identity and deliberately attacking cultural objects. They try to destroy our memory so that nothing remains that connects us with our roots,” and stressed that “unfortunately, this happens almost every day.”

As a result of the bombing by the Russians, 139 cultural heritages have already been destroyed and damaged. These are 23 monuments of national importance, 109 monuments of local importance, 108 objects of valuable historical buildings, and 7 newly discovered cultural heritage objects.

Russian attacks have destroyed or damaged 361 art objects and cultural institutions, among which are 162 religious buildings, 70 houses of culture and other art institutions; 51 memorial monuments; 44 libraries; 34 museums and reserves.

These crimes were recorded in 15 regions of Ukraine. Most of the damage occurred in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.
