Newsroom (06/03/2022 2:01 PM Gaudium Press) Amidst war, destruction, pain and fear, the German Agency Bild reports a simple yet moving ceremony: a wedding in the front lines.

Lesya and Valerij have known each other for a long time and are currently fighting in a civilian defence unit. Their wedding date had been set long before the war when suddenly, the Russian invasion took place. Far from postponing it, they decided to keep the date and tie the knot today, Sunday, March 6, 2022.

Postpone the wedding because of Putin? Out of the question! We celebrate life and love,” they remark amidst the cheers and joy of their comrades-in-arms.

The bride is happy, “but my heart is crying,” she confesses. She usually looks after children’s groups in the scouts, and now all “her” children are on the run, as is the rest of her family.

Despite the adverse circumstances, a special protection has been felt next to their military checkpoint outside Kyiv: Bomb blasts stopped the first attempt that day to hold the ceremony. It was only an hour after the artillery barrage that Lesya and Valerij were able to pronounce “Yes, I do.”

Amidst the joy, a surprise celebrity guest also attended the ceremony and greeted the newlywed couple: boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko (45), the younger brother of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. “Life goes on – no matter what,” he notes. “That is the message of this touching wedding: The Russians destroy, while we stand for life, creation, creativity,” Klitschko concluded.
