Seven people were killed, including two female employees of Caritas Mariupol.
Newsroom (12/04/2022 11:45 PM, Gaudium Press) Seven people were killed when a tank fired on the office that Caritas maintains in the city of Mariupol, which is still under siege by Russian forces in Ukraine.
The Twitter account of Caritas-Spes, the charitable mission of the Latin rite bishops in Ukraine, announced, “We have received bad news: a tank fired at our Caritas office in Mariupol and there were people there at the time. Seven people were killed, including two female employees of Caritas Mariupol.”
For its part, Caritas Ukraine, which is the Caritas service of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, announced, “The Caritas center in Mariupol was destroyed. There are casualties. The building was hit by a Russian tank. At the same time, there were people seeking shelter and a safe place. Seven people died, including two of our staff.”
Both Caritas-Spes and Caritas Ukraine belong to the international network overseen by Caritas Internationalis.
Yesterday, pro-Russian forces in Donest announced the capture of Mariupol Port. The besiegers have been bombarding Mariupol for weeks, killing more than 5,000 civilians. British sources suspect that Russia will be turning to the phosphorus bombs, as it has already done in Donetsk. White phosphorus, when deployed as a weapon, causes horrific burns. The use of phosphorus in war is supposed to be tightly regulated under international law.
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated in a recent conversation with South Korea’s parliament that thousands of people have been killed in the city.
