The Ukrainian seminary looted and destroyed by Russian troops near Kyiv will reopen its doors on August 15-21 to host a youth meeting.
Newsroom (12/09/2022 10:00 AM, Gaudium Press) The Vorzel seminary is located on the outskirts of Kyiv.
In the first days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the seminary premises were ransacked by Russian troops, and some parts destroyed.
The photo of an image of Our Lady torn to pieces by the ground traveled and moved the whole world.
After five months, the seminary can reopen its doors and will host a youth meeting from August 15 to 21. The summer meeting is intended for young people 16 years of age and older.
The rector of the seminary, Father Rusian Mykhalkiv confesses that he doesn’t know how many young people will show up and adds, “It’s not important (the number). It is important to change the environment, to have time, to listen to the Lord.”
Among spiritual exercises and recreational and playful activities, the summer program also foresees a visit to localities badly hit by the war.
Continue despite the difficulties and the exemplary generosity of the people
In this regard, the rector explained that in spirituality young people must find the answer to everything they have experienced.
He also stated that despite all the difficulties that Ukraine is currently going through, the motivation is great for holding the summer meeting:
“Despite everything that is happening, despite the war that has complicated and deeply reduced our lives. Despite this, it means that we want to remain faithful to life, to guard our future, to look forward.”
The rector answered some questions about the future of young people and Ukraine. “Despite the madness of this situation and the injustice that cries out to the heavens, we see deeply Christian and human dynamics” Father Rusian stated.
According to the priest, the war has caused people to rediscover generosity. You see people helping each other without asking anything in return.
The future of young people in Ukraine
The rector said that many young people have fled Ukraine, but many have returned, at least temporarily.
In fact, because of the harsh winter in Ukraine, it is believed that a new exodus will take place between next October and November.
On the damage done by the war, the priest commented that the war has also stolen the future of many young people: the destruction of universities and schools is proof of this.
When asked if the schools will reopen in September, the priest said that the schools are not able to provide security for young people at this time.
However, staying at home, especially in a country at war, is not a good alternative either. (FM)
